After years of telling herself she was unathletic and inflexible, Monica discovered yoga and, with it, a deep appreciation for the human body. Now she’s devoted to helping others uncover the delight and power that come from purposeful, celebratory movement. Former Washingtonian Kyra Sudofsky played a major role in this revelation, and DC’s Kristen Krash became Monica’s primary instructor after Kyra left for the West Coast. Monica now studies locally at Unity Woods and with other area-based Iyengar instructors
She completed her 300-HR yoga teacher training with Rodney Yee and Colleen Saidman at New York’s Yoga Shanti and continues to study anatomy, philosophy, and asana with Gary Kraftsow and Leslie Kaminoff. Monica has also received certification in all levels of pilates mat class through Power Pilates, completed further training with DC’s own Fuse Pilates, and trained in restorative yoga under the instruction of Judith Hanson Lasater. Her classes are infused with kindness, good humor, and playfulness. She is Red Cross CPR and First Aid Certified.
Please inquire for more information about arranging a one-on-one lesson. A more detailed training and teaching history is available upon request.
Monica was born a writer and has mom-penned unicorn-centric works from the early years to prove it. She graduated with BA in English with a concentration in Creative Writing from Salisbury University in 2003. She also earned a BA in Philosophy during her time at SU, which included a semester at Oxford University. After graduating Johns Hopkins Writing Seminars with an MA in Poetry, Monica began writing essays for a variety of outlets, including The Guardian, Alternet, Huffington Post, The Best Sex Writing 2010, Ms., and The Rumpus. Her work has appeared in Nerve, Make/shift, DCist, and $pread, where she was as editor for two years.
In previous years, Monica taught English literature and composition at Johns Hopkins, Montgomery College, and Northern Virginia Community College. She’s been invited to speak about human rights, sexual rights, and the sex industry by Yale University, Washington University, AU Law, George Washington University, University of Maryland, and the NYC Grassroots Media Conference. She is also a board member of DC non-profit, HIPS (Helping Individual Prostitutes Survive.)
